Senior Vice President at Colliers
Area of Specialization
I am a Senior Vice President with Colliers International, in Walnut Creek, California. I have over 30 years of experience in commercial real estate specializing in shopping center leasing, development, and sales in the East Bay Area (San Ramon, Dublin, Danville, Alamo, Walnut Creek, Concord, Pittsburg, Antioch, Brentwood, Pleasanton).
Business and Educational Background
After graduating from the University of Oregon with a Finance degree, I joined Grubb & Ellis for a 13 year stretch. I joined Colliers in 2000, as a Vice President, and continue with specializing in shopping center leasing, development, and investment sales for property owners in Contra Costa County. My primary focus is representing Institutional shopping center ownerships, and providing strategic long term planning and remerchandising strategies for neighborhood and community shopping centers.
I am genuinely curious about what makes retail businesses successful, and ask pointed questions to determine if the prospective tenants are a good match for shopping centers. Underwriting has been a key component of my success, and has led to long term relationships. I have represented Doerken Properties on their shopping center in Walnut Creek for over 20 years, and Invesco Real Estate for 25 years on their projects in Alamo, Walnut Creek and Dublin, and Waterford & Associates on their Sand Creek Crossing center in Brentwood California for over 10 years.
I have also acquired commercial real estate on my personal account over the past 15 years, and bring to the table personal ownership experience. I can sympathize with owners on the costs of commissions, TI’s and downtime, while making recommendations to maximize real estate value and objectives.
I have leased and sold millions of square feet of shopping centers during my career. Several notable transactions include:
In 2015, I negotiated a renewal with Rite Aid 5 years early on their existing store in Alamo, California. Rite Aid was running out of lease term and wanted to remodel the successful store. I was successful in raising the rent from $0.31 psf/mo to $1.75 psf/mo, in exchange for giving them additional term. We had been tracking their sales activity and lease expiration for years. In the end it was a win/win for both parties. Invesco was able to capitalize on the value created when they sold the shopping center to Donahue Schrieber a year later.
In the same year, I also assisted a landlord on a struggling center in Brentwood, California. I was successful in leasing historical vacancies in an unanchored center to Quickly, Miracle Ear, Imperiale Tap Room, and then sold the center to the Dunhill Partners that owns the shopping center directly across the street.
In 2007 I assisted the same property owners above in leasing Crow Canyon Crest shopping center, in San Ramon to Starbucks Coffee, Comerica Bank, Zachary’s Pizza and The Cheese Steak shop. He then sold the center along with the adjacent Bank of America building to Federal Realty. Much of my business comes from repeat satisfied clients.
In 2008, I represented Blake Hunt Ventures and SKB in the leasing of a former 50,000 sf Albertson’s store to Mi Pueblo grocery stores.
